This course provides a broad overview of social psychology theory and research, including interpersonal perception, decision making, attitude formation and change, group dynamics, social motivation, and cultural socialization. Both classic and contemporary empirical and theoretical developments in the field will be examined, though recent advances will be stressed. A particular emphasis will be placed on the application of social psychology to social problems and everyday experiences.

Strategic Procurement

The course introduces students to the principles, philosophies, and concepts of purchasing and supply management (PSM) and the methods used to manage PSM activities in an organization and in collaboration with other supply chain members. The course provides an understanding of several aspects of procurement (e.g., procurement process, centralized vs. decentralized procurement, purchasing and supplier performance, category strategy, portfolio analysis, make-or-buy, outsourcing and offshoring, supplier evaluation and selection, supplier performance management, supplier relationship management, and supply risk management).

Logistics in the Supply Chain

This course is intended to introduce analytical approaches to the logistics challenges involved in the management of supply chains. The course begins with an introduction to a strategic framework for supply chain design and operations centered on the logistics function. Then, it focuses on demand management and the design of distribution networks across the supply chain. Having covered how these networks are designed, the course then will delve into how to staff the facilities in these networks and the shipping lanes connecting these facilities. The course closes with the fundamentals on the management of inventories in these facilities under deterministic and stochastic conditions.

In this course, students will be exposed to a myriad of issues, problems, and decision tools that pertain to, hinder, and/or facilitate the effective and efficient internal and external flow of materials and requisite knowledge. Many of the topics we will examine are drawn from contemporary courses in production/operations management, purchasing management, and logistics management. As the course progresses, we will see greater linkages among these three knowledge areas and between these knowledge areas and other related areas.

Evidence Based Inquiry in Organizational Leadership

This course aims to expose students to the assumptions, principles and applications of qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods research design. These include knowing the definitions for these different approaches, considering philosophical worldviews, reviewing the literature, understanding the use of theory, anticipating ethical issues, and developing writing strategies. We will discuss the process of research as it relates to each approach. This process includes writing an introduction, specifying a purpose statement, and developing research questions and/or hypotheses.

The field of positive psychology has exploded over the last two decades, as researchers have discovered the power of positive psychology to reframe our perspectives on negative life events and transform lives. In this course, we will examine the evolution of the field, from concepts of hope and resilience to concepts of positive pessimism and post-traumatic growth. Research on positive psychology interventions will be critically analyzed in an effort to differentiate solid discoveries from the “hype” that has invaded the popular literature. In addition, you will apply several interventions to your own life in an effort to deepen your understanding of positive psychology through enactment and self-reflection.

This course engages the normative and epistemological underpinnings of many of the theories of organizational leadership. This course focuses on the use of business process analytics and quality management to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of business processes within an organization. The course starts out by introducing modern quality management approaches including Lean Six Sigma. It then covers the DMAIC improvement cycle which is the core process used to drive process improvement projects. This course also covers elements of service operations management and capacity planning and design experiments with lean six sigma applications to both the manufacturing and services space.

Conflict Theory focuses on conflict before resolution strategies are considered. Thus, the class concentrates on the sources and nature of conflict – how and why it escalates, de-escalates, or persists, and the conditions under which it can be constructive or destructive. The class is designed to give students a better understanding of the meaning and dynamics of conflict to broaden a student’s understanding of how conflict resolution strategies operate within the broader structure of conflict situations.

The field of conflict resolution draws its foundational theory from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives. One of those key perspectives is social psychology. The Psychology of Conflict course focuses on providing an empirically grounded understanding of social psychology as it relates to conflict processes and conflict resolution. In this context, the course will discuss foundational principles within social psychology, the influence of individual focused factors, the psychology of intergroup dynamics, and other key topics.

This course examines traditional and contemporary models of choice and decision making. We will consider both the intuitive and rational decision making systems, and the influences of context, experience, attention, memory, information, and uncertainty on choice behaviors and decision making. Frequent analysis of specific scenarios will be required in order to identify common errors of judgment and choice and determine “best” actions for error avoidance. Our in-depth exploration of choice and decision making will involve the critical evaluation of research in cognitive and social psychology, and application of theory and research to real-world situations.
