COURSES IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING COLLECTION

The English Language Learning Collection contains two sets of courses:

General English: ASU Global Launch’s Learn English Now! online English courses, which allow learners of any language level to improve upon their English language skills right away. The courses range from basic through high-intermediate (CEFR A2–B2).

Academic English: ASU Global Launch’s online Academic English courses, which allow learners to improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking to gain the confidence to express themselves in any academic setting, whether they are a student, teacher or other academic professional. The courses range from high-intermediate through advanced (CEFR B2–C2).

General English

GDE 20

Introduction to Communication

This course introduces basic English language skills for international learners. It builds a strong foundation of reading, speaking, and verbal skills to develop learner’s language abilities in everyday English. Learners will read, listen, write, and speak on a variety of personal topics.

GDE 25

Introduction to Language Skills

This course continues to introduce basic English language skills for international learners. It builds a strong foundation of reading, speaking, and verbal skills to develop learner’s language abilities in everyday English. Learners will read, listen, write, and speak on a variety of personal topics.

Basic Level

GDE 30

Basic Foundations

This course introduces a foundation of basic English language to international learners. It focuses on the structures of English, sentence parts and sentence formation, for basic conversations and basic writing skills related to everyday English.

GDE 35

Basic Communication

This course builds on a foundation of basic English language for international learners. It further develops the structures of English needed in basic conversations and basic writing skills related to everyday English. Learners are introduced to past forms.

GDE 40

Basic Language Skills

This course refines and expands basic English language skills for international learners. It builds on reading, written and verbal skills to develop learners’ language abilities in everyday English. Learners will carry out conversations on a variety of personal topics.

GDE 45

Basic Achievement

This course further refines and consolidates basic English language skills for international learners. It emphasizes language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking to expand learners’ knowledge and language use in a wide variety of topics in home, family, friends, work, school, free time, and more related to everyday English.

Intermediate Level

GDE 50

Intermediate Foundations for English Language Learning

This course introduces a foundation of intermediate English language to international learners. It builds on the basic structures of English to refine learners’ language abilities for everyday and academic English.

GDE 55

Intermediate Communication for English Language Learning

This course builds on a foundation of intermediate English language for international learners. It emphasizes and refines communication skills to build learners’ language abilities in academic English.

GDE 60

Intermediate Language Skills for English Language Learning

This course refines and expands intermediate English language skills for international learners. It emphasizes and refines reading, written and verbal skills to develop learners’ language abilities in academic English.

GDE 65

Intermediate Achievement for English Language Learning

This course further refines and consolidates intermediate English language skills for international learners. It emphasizes academic English language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking and introduces and develops essay writing skills.

Academic English

GDE 70

Academic Thinking

This course introduces the critical thinking skills necessary in academic coursework. Learners improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in relation to academic topics and texts along with advanced grammar and vocabulary.

GDE 75

Academic Analysis

This course develops advanced language skills and refines the critical thinking skills necessary in academic coursework. Learners further develop the four core skills to successfully analyze and respond to academic topics and texts, and acquire advanced academic skills and vocabulary in order to be able to form opinions and arguments.

GDE 80

Academic Persuasion

This course is for advanced learners of the English language. Learners will apply critical thinking skills to complex texts and will receive instruction in the characteristics of persuasion in academic writing and speaking as well as instruction in advanced language skills commonly found in persuasive rhetoric.

GDE 85

Academic Achievement

In this course, learners will apply critical thinking skills to complex texts in order to produce their own pieces of writing. They will receive instruction in the characteristics of academic writing, including thesis statements and development of cause/effect, process, and problem/solution essays.

Professional English

PE 001

Professional English

This is a practical, hands-on course in which students learn how to present themselves and how to communicate more effectively in a professional environment. Topics cover personal branding, email writing, short proposal writing, non-verbal and oral communicating and delivering an effective presentation.
